“Fraser Stewart is a performance based artist. ‘A life long obsession’
captures the flickering intensity of our daily over consumption of images.
We are seduced by the lights before finding them an irritant. The flashing
message ensures the inevitable headache is followed by a dose of humour.
‘Scene before you die’ sees Fraser seemingly photographed at various iconic
tourist locations. On closer inspection the images reveal themselves as
mock ups, the artist having not even left his studio to stand in front of
photographic projections. The staging of these mundane images is both
humorous and insightful. Like Parr’s ‘Postcards’ series, they talk about
our obsession with the documentation of a trip ahead of the experience
itself. The media created familiarity with these locations has destroyed
the exotic ideal which the tourist still desires.”
